Description

Modern civilization is a civilization that has brought about mind-boggling progress of science and Technology, thus enriching the world and our lives. The communication revolution has given rise to the concept of ‘global village.’ But modern civilization is also a civilization that has made the 20th century the bloodiest century in human history. 20th century has witnessed, besides the two most brutal World Wars, the worst acts of barbarism — holocaust, Gulag Concentration camps, genocides and atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Modern civilzation has also created a world which, every year, is losing 24 billion tons of top soil, destroying 44 million acres of forests, creating 15 million acres of new deserts, pumping huge quantity of carbon-dioxide into the atmosphere, over-heating the earth and transforming it into a virtual pressure-cooker which could explode any time. And, further, it is this civilization which has given birth to a global set-up where disparities in incomes is widening, where 20 per cent of people have cornered 86 per cent of the world’s gross product, and where the bottom 80 per cent live on $1 a day. Surely, a civilization of this character has within it the seeds of its own destruction. This book urges the world to spot these cancerous seeds and replace them with benign ones. To create a need-based, not a greed-propelled society that would live in harmony with nature, nursing a culture of compassion and universality. The incipient barbarism of the present day civilization has to be eliminated if the world has to be made a place of peace, safety and dignity for all living beings.
